The 2008 Fat Face RS400 Irish Nationals and last Fat Face Eurocup event of the year took place in exceptionally friendly Wexford Harbour Boating and Tennis Club, in rather testing conditions from 10 - 12 October. Contestants arrived by various means from many corners of many lands.  The forecast proved largely accurate, and sailors were greeted on Friday morning by a nice little F5-6 and lots of lovely rain, which had veterans of the previous weekend’s Grafham outing reaching for drysuits and second best sails.  The PRO wisely decided to keep the fleet in the flat water of the inner harbour, where the potential for carnage was at least contained by the shore and limited depth. From the shore, looking downwind, conditions looked relatively benign, an illusion that was promptly shattered once away from the shelter of the shore.  Most of the entrants made it safely to the start area, with the notable exception of 1275, staffed by Sam Parker and Stu Sagger, whose mast decided after the first gybe that enough was enough and blew into three mutually exclusive parts.  |

1 Kicker: Make sure its setup on a continuous system. Get an adult to help with the fid-work, its worth the money paying someone for peace of mind (unless you are a geek and actually like hanging upside down poking around under the thwart)… a) Many people underestimate the amount of kicker you need to use when its windy. See what happens if you keep pulling until the bottom batten starts to invert on the main. This is the kind of tension that should be used when its very breezy – linked with the Cunningham, see next point. b) The second point is that many people underestimate the amount that the kicker needs to be let off going downwind. The best way to appreciate this is to pull all the sails up on a light day (important – light day…). Having hoisted and set the spinnaker, go and stand 20 feet from the leeward quarter and look at the shapes of all 3 leeches. The aim is to match the twists in all three – and it’s easy to see how you can choke the “exhaust†off the A-Sail if you don’t let off enough kicker to match its shape.  |
